The Meta-Skill Nobody Talks About
Traditional developer training:
- Take a course
- Learn syntax

What I Didn’t Learn in Bootcamps
I’ve got 25+ years in tech. I know how to code.
But none of that prepared me for AI development.
Here’s what I had to learn from scratch:
1. When to Use AI vs When to DIY
Week 1 mistake:

Week 3 reality:

The lesson: Use AI for building, not explaining simple stuff you already know.
2. How to Describe What You Want (Clearly, Not Perfectly)
Bad prompt (too vague):
"Make the blog better"
Bad prompt (too detailed):
"Create a floating theme toggle button positioned
at bottom-right:20px using CSS position:fixed with
a z-index of 9999 implementing localStorage API
for persistence with graceful degradation for
private browsing mode and..."
Good prompt (clear intent):
"Add a light/dark mode toggle.
Floating button, bottom-right.
Save preference to localStorage.
Use CSS variables for theming."
The pattern: State the goal, key requirements, technical approach. Let AI figure out implementation details.
3. The Validation Reflex
Old reflex: Write code → Test code → Fix bugs New reflex: AI writes code → Immediately test → Give feedback → Ship

The 5 Skills You Actually Need
Forget bootcamps. Here are the real skills I developed by shipping:
Skill 1: Rapid Prompting
Not: Crafting the perfect prompt Instead: Getting 80% of what you want in 10 seconds
Training method:
- Write prompt in under 30 seconds
- See what AI produces
- Learn from gaps
- Iterate
Example progression:
Day 1:
Me: "I need to publish blog posts automatically"
[Gets something that mostly works]
Day 10:
Me: "Create GitHub Actions workflow that publishes
posts daily at 9 AM EST. Change published:false
to published:true for posts dated today."
[Gets exactly what I need, first try]
The difference: I learned what details matter through trial and error.
Skill 2: Instant Pattern Recognition
The skill: Spot red flags in 5 seconds
Training method: Every time AI generates code, scan for:
- Hardcoded values (should be variables)
- Missing validation (should check edge cases)
- Security risks (should sanitize/encode)
- Unhandled errors (should have try/catch)
Example:
Week 1:

Training method: Track what makes AI fix things faster:
Vague feedback (slow):
Me: "Social sharing is broken"
AI: "Can you describe what's wrong?"
Me: "The links don't work right"
AI: "Which platform?"
[5 exchanges to fix]
Precise feedback (fast):
Me: "Twitter share link has %0A characters in URL.
Looks like double encoding - the twitterText
variable includes newlines and then gets
encoded again."
AI: [Fixes immediately]
[1 exchange to fix]
The pattern I learned: State what you observed, what you expected, and your hypothesis about the cause.
Skill 4: Security Paranoia
The mindset shift: AI doesn’t think about security by default. You must.
Training method: Build a mental checklist:
Every feature, ask:
- Could malicious input break this?
- Are URLs properly encoded?
- Are user inputs validated?
- Could this leak sensitive data?
- Did I test with weird characters (’ ” & < >)?
Real example:
AI generates:

My security check:
❌ Unencoded newlines in URL
❌ No length limit (could break char limits)
❌ Special characters not escaped
❌ Haven't tested with user input
Me: "Security review: URLs need proper encoding,
and we should validate length limits."
How I trained this: Every time I found a security issue, I added it to my mental checklist.
Skill 5: The Testing Reflex
The reflex: AI finishes → Immediately test → Give feedback
Training method: Make testing easier than committing:

What I learned: My ”???” moments are where bugs hide.
Training Exercise 4: Build Your Prompt Library
The exercise: Save prompts that work well
My prompt evolution:
Generic prompt (Week 1):

Specific prompt (Week 2):
"Add social sharing buttons for Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook"
Template prompt (Week 3):
"Build [FEATURE] with:
- Implementation code

What I learned: Patterns emerge from repetition.
The Skills Traditional Developers Already Have
Good news: You don’t start from zero.
